The anticipation is finally over as the Copper River fishery opens this week! Pricing is anticipated to be very high as the first stocks hit the shore. We expect pricing to slowly decrease as the season gets underway. Talk to your sales rep and pre-order this highly anticipated product!

More good news as the Soft Shell Crab fishery has opened to good supply! Whales, Jumbos, Primes, and Hotels are all available on a pre-order basis either live or dressed!

Groundfish pricing will continue to be high as supply is limited due to closures. Because spawning typically occurs during the month of May, many fisherman choose to take their 20 day required tie up during this time. This results in very limited supply and high prices.

Mussel spawning season is just around the corner. Typically, spawning season occurs late in the spring time, however it can be unpredictable. It is important to note that spawning does not affect the quality or taste of the meat.
If allowed to go untreated, the spawn will produce a rancid odor resulting in non-saleable product. Spawn is usually marked by the presence of a thick light orange liquid.

Please follow these steps to ensure a quality, saleable mussel supply:
1. Visually inspect product for spawn.
2. Keep Mussels on ice and as close to 34°F as possible
3. If you notice the Mussels have released spawn, immediately rinse with fresh cold water. Rinse, drain and re-ice bottom of box before returning mussels to refrigeration.

Countries in the South Atlantic have aligned to help protect the Grouper species. They have implemented a moratorium in which it is illegal to catch Grouper. Traditionally, this time of year, Grouper spawn. This moratorium allows the species to repopulate. The moratorium will be ending next week. We should begin to see Grouper at the end of the week or early the following week.

Tuna supplies and pricing continues to remain stable.

Thankfully, Gulf of Maine groundfish are beginning to decline in price due to a cease in North Atlantic storms.

For months now, we have been hearing rumors of an impending crisis with the Chilean Salmon market. Unfortunately, the rumors are now being substantiated and the lethal Infectious Salmon Anemia (ISA) is aggressively taking over the Salmon farms. Industry officials are speculating that by April or May of 2009 there may not be any fresh Salmon exported from Chile.

ISA first surfaced in Norway in 1984. By 1988, ISA had become so widespread that the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food was required to declare it a notifiable disease. During the late eighties and early nineties, the Chilean Salmon farming industry exploded on the scene. At this time, aquaculture was still relatively new. The learning curve was very sharp and unfortunately, we are now beginning to see the effects 20 years later.

In order to rectify this situation and “clean up” this problem, the Salmon farms are being forced to harvest all Salmon and process them before they die off. No new “fry” (baby Salmon) are being introduced to contaminated waters, as they would not be fruitful. In order to harvest a “class” of Salmon, they must be at least 18 months old. Therefore, it may be two years before the Chilean Salmon fisheries are producing any marketable product.

In order to meet demand, Canada, Scotland, and Norway will be forced to up production. This will cause a strain on existing farms resulting in price increases.

Since ISA is not a new problem in the Salmon farming industry, new measures are being put in place to contain and hopefully eliminate another wide spread problem that can have such a devastating effect on the worlds supply, as well as the ecosystems that are affected by mismanaged fisheries.

Due to the sluggish economy, many seafood items are remaining stable with the exception of scarce items like #1 Tuna.

Inclement weather in the Northeast has caused a cease in Nantucket Bay Scallop Harvesting. Fisherman are unable to harvest these precious gems by law when the weather reaches below 28 degrees.

Normal fishing activity has resumed after the holiday season in the North Atlantic causing the availability of groundfish to increase and the price to decrease!

Southern Atlantic species such as Tuna, Swordfish, and Red Snapper are scarce this week resulting in significant price increases.

Keep your eyes out for some new products heading our way this week! In an effort to bring you the most responsibly produced seafood available, we will be extending our sustainable line to include Farm Raised Halibut from Gigha Island in Scotland and Fisherman's Daughter Shrimp, wild caught in the Gulf of Mexico!

USDA Panel Approves First Rules For Labeling Farmed Fish 'Organic'! For the first time, a federal advisory board has approved criteria that clear the way for farmed fish to be labeled "organic," a move that pleased aquaculture producers!

North Atlantic exports out of Icelandic waters are currently very strong... The weakening Euro, continues to make the pricing on imported goods more and more attractive!

In an ever increasing "Green" conscious society, Loch Duart Salmon Fishery has been forced to expand its production in order to keep up with the demand for this delicious, sustainably raised salmon!

Overproduction of Frozen Thai Shrimp has lead to a cutback in the industry in attempts to stabilize the price. Contessa pricing should therefore be stable throughout the holidays!
